Botox and neurotoxins, done by a physician

A 10-to-15-minute treatment for the lines that come from frowning, squinting and raising your eyebrows — with Botox, Dysport or Jeuveau.

What neurotoxin treats

Neurotoxins relax the small muscles that crease the skin when you make an expression. BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet, forehead lines and the vertical bands in the neck (FDA label). At Total Body Renewal it is used for forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines, and Dr. Wood also treats fine lines around the lips when she judges it suitable.

The appointment

  • Book a “Botox Visit” — 30 minutes, so there is time to talk first
  • The injections themselves take 10 to 15 minutes
  • A numbing spray is available if you ask
  • Most people go straight back to work

Results, and how long they last

Patients usually start to see the change within 24 to 48 hours. The effect lasts about three to six months, depending on the area, the dose and how strongly those muscles work, so most patients come back on a regular schedule.

Botox, Dysport or Jeuveau?

All three treat the same lines. Dr. Wood helps you choose at the visit, and the plan can change from one treatment to the next.

When filler is the better answer

Neurotoxin works on the lines that movement makes. Lost volume in the lips or cheeks is a job for dermal filler instead, and some faces benefit from both. Our guide to choosing between Botox and filler lays out the difference.
